Shahira S. Fahmy Wins Top Faculty Award at Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference

Professor Shahira S. Fahmy was awarded a competitive top faculty award (first place) at the most prestigious Journalism and Mass Communication academic conference in the United States. The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) promotes the highest possible standards for journalism and mass communication education, to cultivate the widest possible range of communication research, to encourage the implementation of a multi-cultural society in the classroom and curriculum, and to defend and maintain freedom of communication in an effort to achieve better professional practice and a better informed public. Fahmy’s work co-authored with former AUC graduate student Omneya Ibrahim, looks at memes and GIFs to unravel the frames and stereotypes of the hijab in these online visuals tools following the 2019 attacks on mosques in New Zealand.

Fahmy is an award-winning international scholar with almost 100 refereed publications at prestigious academic venues. Her recent key note speeches and global engagements include professional visits to more than 30 countries, including universities in England, France, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Latvia, Hungary, South Africa, Ethiopia, China, Pakistan and Kazakhstan.
